Although the rains of the last few weeks have moved us away from the situation of extreme drought we were suffering, we are still in a scenario of drought exceptionality and, at the same time, we are entering the hottest months where the danger of forest fire is extreme. That is why we have prepared this short article about good practices for forest fire prevention while visiting a natural space or doing a section of the Tourdera.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Tourdera is mostly found in a fully Mediterranean context, where forest fires, with the presence of large forest masses and extreme droughts during the summer, can pose a serious danger to people and ecosystems. Therefore, and in these current days, we thought it would be interesting to provide you with some tips to reduce the risk of fire:<\/p>\n

– Do not throw away lit cigarette butts or matches, whether walking or out of a car window.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

– If you go to the natural environment with a private vehicle, park well, without invading paths and tracks. You must leave access routes free so that emergency vehicles can circulate. You must park in designated areas, and always outside of private properties.<\/p>\n

– Do not drive vehicles off authorized paths, and do not park them on dry grass. In the Natural Park, follow the indications of the park’s signs and markings. Do not enter restricted areas and respect the established prohibitions. These measures exist to protect both nature and your safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Now that Sant Joan is approaching, do not launch rockets, firecrackers, fireworks, balloons (such as lanterns) or other artifacts that contain fire in dangerous areas, even if it is in open fields, in agricultural land, or, above all, in urbanizations surrounded by forest or less than 500 meters from forest areas. More tips on pyrotechnics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

– Do not use unauthorized barbecues. Remember that they must be built-in and have a spark arrestor. Do not light bonfires or cook outside authorized places: in these cases, bring prepared food from home.<\/p>\n

– Never leave garbage or waste in the forest. Use collection services and appropriate containers or keep food waste generated in a trash bag and take it home with you.<\/p>\n

– Do not abandon bottles and glass objects in the forest.<\/p>\n

– Inform yourself about the periods of maximum fire risk.<\/p>\n

– If you observe a forest fire or a column of smoke inside the forest, it is important to notify the nearest emergency services as soon as possible, such as Rural Agents, Firefighters, Mossos d’Esquadra, or Civil Protection.<\/p>\n

– Collaborate with professional forest fire surveillance and prevention groups.<\/p>\n

If you find yourself in the middle of a forest fire, you should take into account the following action tips:<\/p>\n

– If you see a fire, urgently notify 112 or the nearest authority.<\/p>\n

– If the fire is small, try to extinguish it with water, branches, or sand on the base of the flames. After extinguishing the fire, cover the embers and clear the surrounding area of branches.<\/p>\n

– If the fire surprises you, move away in the opposite direction to the smoke. Breathe through your nose, trying to cover it with a wet cloth.<\/p>\n

– Do not seek refuge in deep places and always flee downhill; fire travels uphill like a chimney, or in a direction perpendicular to the fire’s advance.<\/p>\n

– Do not try to cross the flames; you could get trapped. If there is no other exit, cross where the front is weakest.<\/p>\n

– If the fire reaches you, position yourself in the already burned area, always with your back to the prevailing wind.<\/p>\n

– If your clothes catch fire, do not run: roll on the ground and, if you have a blanket, use it to cover yourself; the fire will extinguish due to lack of air.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And remember, if you need help or want to report an emergency, the first thing you must do is call 112 whenever possible.<\/div>\n
