Swim or preserve? In Montseny, choose nature.

When summer arrives and the heat intensifies, it is normal to look for water spots to cool off and have a good time. The rivers, streams, and pools of the Montseny Natural Park may seem, at first glance, ideal places for a dip. But you should know that these spaces are not just beautiful landscapes: they are fragile ecosystems that must be protected.

Many of the wetlands in Montseny are vital habitats for highly sensitive species, such as the Montseny newt, an endemic amphibian in critical danger of extinction. Any alteration, no matter how small, can have serious consequences for its survival. The presence of people, soap or sunscreen in the water, stirring up the bottom, or simply the rise in temperature due to a lack of natural shade can break the balance of an environment that has taken centuries to form.

It is for this reason that swimming in natural areas within the Park is not allowed. This measure is not to forbid fun, but to guarantee the conservation of a unique environment that is part of the natural heritage of everyone.

However, respecting nature does not mean giving up on cooling off. In the towns around Montseny, there are various municipal swimming pools, tourist accommodations with pools, or designated areas where you can enjoy the water without putting ecosystems at risk. In addition, many of these facilities are committed to sustainability and water-saving criteria.

We can also adapt our way of experiencing summer in the mountains: go for hikes early in the day, look for shaded areas to rest, wear light clothing, and drink water often. Enjoying Montseny also means knowing how to adapt to its rhythm and respecting its carrying capacity.

Montseny Natural Park is a Biosphere Reserve and a space with great ecological and cultural wealth. Preserving it is everyone’s responsibility. Small gestures such as not swimming in the pools, collecting waste, not leaving marked trails, or avoiding excessive noise are actions that contribute directly to the conservation of the territory.

This summer, if you want to enjoy a dip, do it with wisdom and respect. And if you want to live a deeper experience, observe, listen, and connect with nature in silence. Montseny is not only enjoyed with your feet in the water, but also with an open heart.
