Heat prevention tips for hikers and cyclists

It is increasingly well known that summers are getting hotter and temperatures are very high. This beginning of June is being very hot and, therefore, you must remember that if you are thinking about going hiking or taking a bicycle, you must always take great care to protect yourselves from the temperatures. In this article, we give you the main tips to fight the heat.

Whenever you can, follow these recommendations and remember that you have the whole year to enjoy walking or cycling. Likewise, if you decide to go out, always keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid going out during the hottest hours.
  • Carry fresh water and drink regularly even if you are not thirsty. You can freeze one of the bottles you carry, so as it melts, you have nice cold water.
  • If you have pets, leave them at home and avoid exposing them to heatstroke.
  • Always wear a cap or a hat.
  • Use light clothing, preferably cotton, light-colored, and loose-fitting.
  • Try to walk in the shade and rest in cool places. Always avoid stretches where there is no shade.
  • From time to time, wet your face and even your clothes a little.
  • Avoid long hikes or bike rides, and also avoid the hottest hours.
  • Avoid intense physical activities.
  • Eat foods rich in water (fruits, vegetables); they will help you recover the mineral salts lost through sweat.
  • If you do sections of the coast, in Blanes or Malgrat de Mar, you can always finish with a nice dip at the beach.

And, above all, if you find a person suffering from dehydration, you must:

  • Immediately notify medical services or call 112 to inform them and let them tell you what to do.
  • Move them to a cooler place.
  • Give them water, wet them, and fan them until health professionals arrive.

We wish you a great rest of the summer and, above all, that you protect yourselves properly from the sun and heat so you can enjoy outdoor activities safely.
