However, this increase in visitors also brings responsibility: keeping your dog on a lead is essential to ensure coexistence and protect the natural environment. In response to the growing number of dogs off lead in protected areas, the authorities have launched awareness campaigns to prevent conflicts with wildlife and livestock activities.
Areas where keeping your dog on a lead is mandatory
To prevent accidents and preserve biodiversity, it is essential to follow the recommendations, especially in these areas:
- Grazing areas: Herds of cattle, goats and sheep are extremely sensitive. An off-lead dog can cause stress, miscarriages or even fatal accidents among livestock.
- Signposted routes and trails: On busy paths and recreational areas, keeping your dog under control avoids disturbing other hikers and guarantees everyone’s safety.
Monitoring and penalties in natural areas
Failure to comply with the regulations may result in administrative penalties under the municipal by-laws of each locality. Shepherd dogs that care for and protect livestock are exempt from this requirement. Forest rangers and Rural Agents currently not only monitor compliance with the law but also carry out an important educational role.
