Tips to follow in case of emergency and bicycle accident

Bicycle accidents can happen at any time, both in the city and in the mountains. It is essential to be prepared and know how to act in an emergency to minimize risks and ensure quick and effective care. Below are a series of tips that can be very helpful in these situations:

  1. Stay calm and assess the situation. It is important to take a few seconds to analyze the situation and determine the severity of the injuries, both your own and those of anyone else involved.
  2. Move off the road if it is safe to do so. Try to move to a safe place to avoid additional risks.
  3. Check for injuries and request medical assistance. Examine your body and, if there are other affected people, check their condition. In case of serious injuries, call emergency services (112) immediately and follow the instructions.
  4. Signal the area. If possible, signal the accident to alert other cyclists or drivers of the presence of the accident and avoid further accidents.
  5. Check the bike before continuing. If your injuries allow and you decide to continue your journey, ensure that the bike is in good condition to ride.
  6. Consult a doctor even if you feel fine. Some injuries may not manifest immediately. Therefore, it is recommended to have a medical check-up to rule out possible health problems.

Furthermore, in case you need medical attention, Catalonia has 3 official telephone numbers:

  • 012: Information line
  • 061: Health line of Catalonia
  • 112: Emergency line

In case of an emergency call to 112, the following indications should be followed:

  • Precise location of the accident, from the largest area to the smallest. That is, from the city to the specific apartment/building.
  • Specify the type of accident.
  • Approximate number of injured people.
  • Apparent severity of the victims, indicate level of consciousness and breathing.
  • Indicate if an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available.
  • Additional dangers that may worsen the situation.
  • Do not hang up; the health services will do so.
  • Leave the mobile phone on hands-free mode so 112 can give you instructions.
