The Llobateres wetland area

The Les Llobateres wetland area is an enclave located in the municipality of Sant Celoni, also very close to the municipalities of Riells i Viabrea, Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, Hostalric, and Fogars de la Selva. The route of the Tourdera passes precisely through this space which, as you will see, comes from an old human activity that was converted into a space for the flora and fauna of humid environments.

The Les Llobateres wetland area comes from the restoration of an old aggregate extraction activity in the bed of the Tordera River, which began in 1999 with the leadership of the Sant Celoni City Council as the promoting entity. Currently, you will see a lagoon, approximately rectangular in shape, that has an average depth of 4 m and an area of about 8 Ha. Its restoration was carried out, in order to give it an appearance as natural as possible, with irregular and heterogeneous margins, some islands, etc…

Regarding vegetation, you will see an abundant presence of reeds and cattails, humid grasslands on the margins, etc., and some areas with riparian woodlands. All these environments favor the presence of wetland avifauna that seek in these enclaves and in these plant communities their habitats to reproduce, build nests, etc.

Although the proximity of the AP7 motorway is one of its main problems, it is very important that if you visit it, you always follow the recommendations of civility and how to behave in nature. Unfortunately, there is always uncivil behavior such as dumping trash or even poaching. But one of the problems that this space also presents is the release of exotic species, such as the well-known Florida turtles. Around the lagoon, a dirt embankment has been created as a concealment system and to reduce the disturbances derived from human presence and the noise caused by the motorway, although the space has a well-camouflaged observation area.

In this space, you will find different species of flora of humid environments, such as the yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus), common reed (Phragmites australis), cattails (Typha spp.), etc., and associated fauna such as the Mediterranean pond turtle (Mauremys leprosa), the viperine water snake (Natrix maura), and a long list of birds such as the grey heron, the mallard, the moorhen, etc. If you are interested, in the area there are several information panels, the bird observatory, pedestrian canalization fences, etc. Are you encouraged to do a stretch of the Tourdera to discover it? Well, you can do a stretch from the municipalities of Sant Celoni, Fogars de la Selva, Hostalric, Riells i Viabrea, and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, that take you there!
