After months of construction, at the end of July, the cycle path connecting the urban center of Breda and the Riells i Viabrea-Breda railway station was officially inaugurated. This section is an integral part of the Tourdera route between Riells i Viabrea and Breda. This was the last section of the Tourdera under construction, beyond the works still to be carried out as a result of Storm Gloria.
Since the Tourdera route was officially inaugurated in its entirety in the summer of 2019, only this work remained to complete the route 100%. The project suffered many delays, underwent significant modifications, had to be put out to tender again, etc. And, furthermore, the impact of Covid19 and the lockdown must be taken into account, which also contributed to lengthening the completion of the work.
With this itinerary, beyond the Tourdera route, the territory has acquired a very important work because it provides great security in people’s daily mobility and promotes both hiking and cycling. In fact, if you travel by road between Breda and Riells, you will immediately see the number of users who use the new path. If we add to all the local population that uses and will use the path, the users coming from cycle tourism or hiking, in the end, we have an infrastructure that will be amortized in a short time.
The work carried out consists of a 2-kilometer route parallel to the GI-552 road, 3 meters wide, paved with asphalt, and completely segregated from the road (separated by a distance of between 3 and 5.5 meters along the route). In the route, it was also necessary to build a bridge 25 meters long and 3.4 meters above the Riera de Breda, and the junction between the GI-552 and GIV-5523 roads had to be adapted.
We hope that it is an interesting section and that you will be encouraged to try it very soon! We leave you some photographs of the path:
