Section Tourdera La Batllòria – Hostalric

Description of the section

The Tourdera section between La Batllòria and Hostalric is shared by walkers and cyclists throughout. It provides an opportunity to explore the middle course of the River Tordera and its confluence with the Arbúcies stream. This easy, almost completely flat section is 8 km long, with no total ascent and a total descent of 21 m.

The route begins in La Batllòria, at the junction of Tordera Street and School Street, and continues to Streams Park in Hostalric. From there, you can head directly to the town centre along Via Romana Street or continue following the Tordera route to Bulls Square in the historic centre of Hostalric. The second option increases the total distance to 12 km.

To begin, follow the signs towards Hostalric. Walk or cycle down Tordera Street, pass the football ground and cross the footbridge over the river. Then follow the River Tordera downstream to Hostalric. At the end of the section, you will find a wide range of tourist services, including bars, restaurants, shops and municipal facilities.

The route between La Batllòria and Hostalric is a very easy walk of between 8 and 12 km, depending on where you decide to finish in Hostalric. This very flat section showcases the natural heritage of the banks of the Tordera, the lower section of the Arbúcies stream—part of the PEIN and Natura 2000 protected-area networks—and the Les Llobateres wetland.

You can also discover the cultural heritage of medieval Hostalric, including the Fortress, its walled enclosure and the Friars’ Tower. An optional signposted detour leads to the Perxistor Pool, where a memorial marks the former pool at which, according to tradition, Ramon Berenguer II, known as the Towhead, was murdered by his brother Berenguer Ramon, known as the Fratricide.

The starting information panel is in La Batllòria, between Tordera Street and School Street, in an area with parking. Follow the signs downhill towards the football ground and the river. After crossing the footbridge, turn left onto the main route towards Hostalric. Always pay attention to the directional signs and yellow painted markers.

For much of the route, you will walk or cycle beside the River Tordera, although the path moves slightly away from it in places. Approximately halfway along the section, you will pass the Les Llobateres wetland, a former aggregate quarry restored as a natural wetland. Birdwatching hides provide opportunities to observe the local birdlife.

Shortly before reaching Hostalric, you will come to the Arbúcies stream just before it flows into the River Tordera. This is also where the main Tourdera route connects with the branch following the Arbúcies stream.

On reaching Hostalric, you can finish at the sports area, just after crossing the Arbúcies stream, or continue beside the River Tordera to the old town and Tourist Office. If you still have enough energy, explore the town and its medieval heritage, dominated by the impressive Fortress.

Hostalric has a railway station. Gualba railway station is also located only 500 m from La Batllòria and lies directly on the route. Travelling by train is therefore a convenient way to reach the route and return home.
