If you are thinking about going on a route, whether on foot or by bicycle, there are some basic tips you should keep in mind before heading out into the countryside. Hiking or cycling safely is not difficult, but much of what may happen depends on you, your actions and your decisions, so we recommend reading the advice provided in this article. 1 – Plan your activity
First of all, choose an activity that is suitable for you or for the group you are planning to go with. Calculate the time, distances and elevation changes. At Tourdera, we provide you with all the information by sections (from one town or village to another) or for the entire route (with different options).
Don’t forget to check the weather forecast as well. On the Tourdera homepage, you will find a section featuring Meteocat weather forecasts and alerts.
It is highly advisable to prepare an alternative plan in case you need to shorten the activity due to any unforeseen circumstances.
Finally, and very importantly, always let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to return, especially if you are going alone.

2 – Make sure you are properly equipped!
Make sure you take all the equipment you need for the route. Although it may seem obvious, it is important to check everything before setting off! Some of our recommendations include wearing suitable and comfortable footwear and taking warm clothing, a windbreaker, a cap, sunscreen, a mobile phone (and charger) and a small first-aid kit.
Don’t forget to always carry enough water and food.
If you are cycling, take the appropriate equipment, wear a helmet and respect pedestrians’ right of way and traffic regulations.
Finally, we always recommend carrying a map, compass and/or GPS device. Any navigation tool can be useful if you lose your way.

3 – Be cautious
Always start your activity at a reasonable time, making sure you have enough time to complete the route and return safely.
If you are going in a group, always take everyone’s abilities into account and make sure that everyone is comfortable and enjoying the activity.
Never separate from the group or leave anyone behind.
If anything unexpected happens, always consider turning back, returning another day or choosing a shorter and safer alternative.
Stay well hydrated throughout the activity and protect yourself from the sun.
Regularly check your maps, GPS or other navigation tools to make sure you are following the planned route and keeping to your estimated schedule. Remember that Tourdera is an ORG member of Wikiloc, which means you can always locate yourself accurately on a map using Tourdera’s GPS tracks.

4 – If you want to make things easier, hire a guide!
If you are someone who doesn’t enjoy planning everything, worrying about whether you have forgotten something, and so on, you can hire a guide. You will be accompanied by an expert who will remind you of everything you need to keep in mind. A guide will always look after you and help ensure your well-being and safety.

And remember: hiking or cycling safely is your decision, but it is also your responsibility!
